How to Disinfect Carpets Without a Steam Cleaner

June 14, 2021 Published by Leave your thoughts

While there’s nothing quite like the soft feel of carpet underfoot, it’s not without its downsides. Unlike hardwood or vinyl flooring, carpet isn’t always easy to clean and can be prone to staining as well as contamination. If you have small children and/or pets, this could be a real problem.

Fortunately, there are ways for you to disinfect your carpet without needing to call a professional service. This article will demonstrate how you can disinfect and deep clean your carpet without the use of a steam cleaner.

Tools and ingredients you’ll need

  • Scrub brush
  • Bucket
  • Old rag
  • Liquid detergent (liquid dish soap)
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda

Prepare the area

Before disinfecting your carpet, you’ll want to remove any furniture and/or smaller rugs from the area. You should then vacuum your carpet at this point to remove any loose dust, dirt or debris.

Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet after vacuuming, and let it sit for about five minutes while you make your cleaning mixture.

Concoct your mixture

Mix equal parts liquid dish soap, vinegar and cold water together in a bucket until the liquid is foamy. Test it on a small part of your carpet to ensure it won’t cause discoloration. Do not use it if it discolors your carpet; continue use if it does not.

Scrub your carpet with the mixture

Using your scrub brush, dip it into the bucket containing the mixture, and lightly scrub your carpet. Don’t use too much liquid, as this can oversaturate your carpet. You should be using just enough liquid to get it wet but not so much that it is soaked or dripping.

When scrubbing, work from one corner of the carpet to the other, rewetting your brush as needed. Let it sit for at least five minutes once you’re done scrubbing to allow the mixture enough time to work.

Rinse the carpet with cold water

Take a clean rag that is wetted with cold water, and scrub your carpet again from corner to corner. This will pick up any dirt or dust that the cleaning solution has loosened or removed from your carpet.

You’ll want to have multiple rags on hand, and don’t be afraid to change the water if it gets too dirty.

Dry the carpet

It’s recommended that you disinfect your carpet on a day that is hot and low in humidity, as this will speed up the drying process—but this isn’t always possible. You can use fans to help with the drying process or even open a window to let it air dry.

Vacuum the carpet

You began this process with vacuuming your carpet, and you’ll end it doing the same. Vacuuming will remove any excess residue left over from the cleaning mixture, as well as any debris you might have missed. You can now enjoy your clean and disinfected carpet.
